The tool of a Conservation Easement
If voters pass the $10 million Wasatch County Open Space bond, proceeds from the bond would be used to purchase conservation easements on land throughout the county. This would keep lands in the hands of generational landowning families while forever preventing a jumble of sprawling development. These lands would need to qualify under established open space guidelines to ensure compliance with state, federal and charitable standards which would also make them eligible for additional funding. Through the use of a conservation easement the land would stay in the hands of the family and the landowners could pass it on to the next generation or even sell it, but the restrictions preventing wholesale development of the land would remain in place.
