The Cost of Growth

Growth does not pay its own way.

  • School bonds, the cost of roads, sewer, police and fire are just some of the community needs borne by the average taxpayer once a residential subdivision is built. For every $1 of revenue from residential development, it costs communities between $1.19 and $1.35.
  • Conversely, for every $1 in revenue from open space, it costs communities between $0.35 and $0.65.
  • This metric does not take into account the fact that open space attracts tourism and jobs.

OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION IS A NET BENEFIT
